Making of-Black Celebration#28

Title:Making of-Tammi Terrell sketch-2014

Tammi Terrell was gifted with a beautiful , rich tone to her singing voice.

Tammi Terrell with Marvin Gaye made everlasting CLASSICS! like, Your Precious Love.

Her talent was taken from us way early-Terrell's career was interrupted when she collapsed into fellow singer Marvin Gaye's arms as the two performed at a concert at Hampden-Sydney College on October 14, 1967, with Terrell later being diagnosed with a brain tumor. She had eight unsuccessful operations before succumbing to the illness on March 16, 1970 at the age of 24.

Heaven took another song bird.

Title:Making of-Shirley Hemphill sketch-2014

Shirley Ann Hemphill (July 1, 1947 – December 10, 1999) was an American stand-up comedian and actress.

In 1976, she landed the role of wisecracking waitress Shirley Wilson on the sitcom What's Happening!!. The series was a modest hit for ABC, but production and cast problems caused ABC to cancel the series in 1979.

In 1985, Hemphill reprised the role as Shirley Wilson in the syndicated revival of What's Happening!! titled What's Happening Now!!. Like its predecessor, What's Happening Now!! aired for three seasons.

On December 10, 1999, Hemphill died of renal failure at her West Covina, California home. Her body was discovered by a gardener who had looked through a window and saw her lying on her bedroom floor.

She was a very funny lady, Gone way too soon.

Title:Making of-Ray Charles sketch-2014

I'm extremely eclectic in the different genres of music I appreciate, Ray Charles has some hits permanently embedded in my playlist.

He's extraordinary much like Stevie Wonder, to have lost your vision and to create such beautiful music it's remarkable, THANK YOU!

I Got A Woman, Georgie On My Mind, Hit the Road Jack and Mess Around (just a few from his catalogue).

Ray Charles was a movement in progress.

Title:Making of-Phyllis Heyman sketch-2014

Phyllis Hyman was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in the St. Clair Village, the South Hills section of Pittsburgh. Born to an African American family, she was the eldest of seven children and a third cousin of actor Earle Hyman (best known for his recurring role on The Cosby Show as Cliff's father, Russell Huxtable).

Hyman moved to New York City to work on her reputation as a singer and actress.

Clive Davis (Arista Records) & Phyllis Hyman had many clashes at the record label when he took her under his wing but than everything shifted when Whitney Houston broke-out.

On the afternoon of June 30, 1995, Hyman committed suicide by overdosing on pentobarbital and secobarbital in the bedroom of her New York City apartment at 211 West 56th Street. She was found unconscious at 2pm, hours before she was scheduled to perform at the Apollo Theater and died three hours later at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital. Her suicide note read in part:

"I'm tired. I'm tired. Those of you that I love know who you are. May God bless you.

She was 45 years old. The following week would have been her 46th birthday.

Title:Making of-Nick Ashford sketch-2014

In the early nineties I was jumping around to several different places of employment and on of those jobs took me to Sounds Records (60th and 3rd Ave) which use to be a store where you can walk in and buy music.

Has it been that long, WOW!

My job was head stock person of the classical section which opened me up at a younger age to appreciate such powerful expression in music.

I met three customers at that job, I will never forget as long as I live because I had admired all three from afar and one day at work (different days)...Each one walked-in an treated me with civility and kindness, Even after I became a fan first and professional second.

Patrick Stewart from Star Trek the Next Generation, Jeff Fahey from The Lawnmower Man and Nick Ashford. His hair in person was so luxurious and flowed with such ease.

Title:Making of-Nell Carter sketch-2014

My devotion to this woman was insane, I first fell madly in LOVE with Nell Carter when I first saw her on the big-screen in the film version of the movie "HAIR" with Charlotte Rae, Beverly D'Angelo and forever super SEXY, Treat Williams (just to name a few of the cast) but something about Nell's performance in that movie had me hooked.

Of course, I watched "Gimme A Break" every week and when she did "Ain't MisBehavin'" that was a special treat.

Sadly behind all the glitz & glamour of Hollywood, Nell died almost homeless and penniless. Despite how she ended-up, This was a TRUE DIVA in her day.

Respect!

Title:Making of-Marvin Gaye sketch-2014

The music industry suffered a little bit when it lost this INCREDIBLE TALENT, Marvin Gaye was a force to be reckoned with. His presence on stage was electrifying and those vocal pipes were pristine, masculine and decisive.

He didn't just sing, He got in your subconsciousness and made revelations with countless hits-How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You), I Heard It Through the Grapevine, What's Going On, Let's Get It On, Sexual Healing and some lasting duet records with Tammi Terrell, Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Your All I Need to Get By. Some songs written by Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson of Ashford & Simpson fame.

Dam shame he had to die at the hands of his belligerent father-At around 11:38 am on April 1, 1984, as Marvin was seated on his bed talking to his mother, Gaye's father shot at Marvin twice. The first shot, which entered the right side of Gaye's chest, was fatal, having perforated his vital organs. Gaye was taken to the emergency room of the California Hospital Medical Center and was pronounced dead on arrival at 1:01 pm. Gaye died a day before turning 45. The gun with which Marvin Gaye, Sr. shot his son was given to him by Marvin as a Christmas present....Where the HELL is Marvin Gaye's life story, Hollywood.

Title:Making of-Marsha P. Johnson sketch-2014

Growing-up in the Bronx in New York City in the late 1980's was very stifling, Showing any sign of your fierce gay fagetry could get you bludgeoned. I walked that thin line every "motherfucking day".

When the opportunity came for me to buy a subway token and travel downtown to the West Village, Particularly "Gay Mecca" in those days was Christopher Street. Home of all the fabulous freaks, gorgeous men and over-flowing with opulent sexuality in the atmosphere.

In those days, Gay men would hang-out only a few blocks from The World Trade Center, In the trucker division station (in the docking area), Anyway...

Marsha P. Johnson would always "pop-up" out of no where, not really to bother you or join into the communal bonding. She would stand around and just watch from a far, very quiet, always sweet and possessing a loving spirit about herself. I knew very little about her the few times I saw him, Years later I became educated on his profound history in the GAY Civil Rights MOVEMENT.

There was always a group of us hanging down at the end of Christopher Street was the entrance to the cross-walk over to the westside highway (the piers), Back in those days the piers were horrific. They were rickety, dangerous to walk on or cross over because the weather had decayed them dramatically but we all hung out their way into the mid-night hours and always on some nights, There was Marsha with a wise crack or just a smile and kept on walking...

I'm BLESSED to have known him from being on the scene and humbled by her plate.

Title:Making of-LaWanda Page sketch-2014

Do You remember? LaWanda Page ushered RuPaul into the world on her debut vinyl recording of the album "Supermodel of the World".

Way before that illustrious honor, LaWanda Page was an American actress and comedienne best known for her role as Aunt Esther in the 1970s TV sitcom Sanford and Son.

Also another one of my favorite shows growing-up as a child.

Making of-Black Celebration#19

Title:Making of-Jean-Michael Basquiat sketch-2014

Jean-Michael Basquiat was a Haitian-American artist. Basquiat first achieved notoriety as part of SAMO, an informal graffiti group who wrote enigmatic epigrams in the cultural hotbed of the Lower East Side of Manhattan, along side with Keith Haring (just to name a few)New York City during the late 1970s where the hip hop, post-punk and street art movements had coalesced. By the 1980s he was exhibiting his Neo-expressionist and Primitivist paintings in galleries and museums internationally. The Whitney Museum of American Art held a retrospective of his art in 1992. Basquiat was also the one-time lover/friend/companion of the material girl herself, MADONNA.

I have always admired both of these artists-When Andy Warhol died on February 22, 1987, Basquiat became increasingly isolated, and his heroin addiction and depression grew more severe.  Despite an attempt at sobriety during a trip to Maui, Hawaii, Basquiat died on August 12, 1988, of a heroin overdose at his art studio on Great Jones Street in New York City's NoHo neighborhood. He was 27.

Title:February-Black Celebration-Gary Colman sketch-2014

Gary Wayne Coleman was an American actor, known for his childhood role as Arnold Jackson in the American sitcom Diff'rent Strokes (1978–1986) and for his small stature as an adult. I was a HUGE fan of this show growing-up for a lot of reasons. Sadly the after life of the show was very tragic for it's three main actors, Dana Plato, Todd Bridges & Gary Coleman.

Personally, I have always enjoyed his performances, especially the one's with Janet Jackson on Different Strokes & Good Times.

Making of-Black Celebration#17

Title:February-Black Celebration-Florence Ballard sketch-2014

One of the "original" founding members of the girl-group of the 1960's...The Supremes, this is the incomparable Florence Ballard (listen to her plate). I could not tell you why I'm so attracted to her but something behind those eyes, screams "agony"...I was compelled to draw this portrait.

Florence Ballard is best known as a member of MOTOWN's vocal group, The Supremes, Ballard sang on sixteen top forty singles with the group, including ten number-one hits. On February 21, 1976, Ballard entered Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital, complaining of numbness in her extremities. She died at 10:05 a.m. the ensuing morning from cardiac arrest, caused by a coronary thrombosis (a blood clot in one of her coronary arteries) at the age of 32.

"Flo"-was one of her nicknames, was the original lead singer of The Supremes when they were The Primettes and Flow was the one who chose the name SUPREMES. Berry Gordy did make Diana Ross the lead singer in 1964.

A promising career cut too short.

Making of-Black Celebration#16

Title:February-Black Celebration-Flip Wilson sketch-2014

Flip Wilson was a comic in the 1970's who had his own variety show. The show earned him high accolades and enormous respect for a black comedian of his day, TIME magazine even dubbed him "The First Black Superstar" in January of 1972. Born Clerow Wilson, Jr. in Jersey City, New Jersey.

His show was a regular staple in our household, Made me laugh so HARD!!! as a little boy and let's not forget his alter-ego & most popular character, Geraldine Jones, who always referred to her boyfriend, "Killer".

Making of-Black Celebration#15

Title:February-Black Celebration-Bob Marley sketch-2014

According to my mother, I was born at the exact same hospital Bob Marley passed away in-Bob Marley died on May 11, 1981 at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami (now University of Miami Hospital); he was 36 years old.

His music takes me somewhere creatively, A place, A spot, That I admire greatly. His life story is epic as well as his legacy.

I'll puff one in his honor.

Making of-Black Celebration#14

Title:February-Black Celebration-Larry Levan sketch-2014

Larry Levan was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York in 1954-an American DJ best known for his decade-long residency at the New York City night club Paradise Garage, Levan got his start alongside DJ Frankie Knuckles at the Continental Baths were Bette Midler & Barry Manilow (Just to name a few) became stars among all the beautiful naked men in towels trolling for random sex.

In September 2004, Levan was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame for his outstanding achievement as a DJ. Although I never attended Paradise Garage, I respect Larry Levan's contribution to the music I LOVE.

Gratitude towards Belasco & The HUN

Title:THANK YOU, Belasco&The HUN-2014

Title:THANK YOU, Belasco&The HUN-2014

The decision to distribute The DARK WORLD Chronicles as a self-published paperback comic book drew largely in part from my collection of mail-order comics (which ultimately drove my passion overboard). Two of the main outlets for this source of creativity came from well-established artist known by the pseudonym; Belasco & The HUN.

My hubby had contacted The HUN at one point (sometime around 1999) and I was lucky enough to receive a letter from him, Once I locate it in my archives-It will be posted. The HUN told me he admired my work and if memory serves me well he may have given me some advice on how to proceed with the business of selling my story etc. etc. I have never had the esteem pleasure of meeting Belasco but I did work side-by-side with an associates of his in 2004 @ The TOM of FINLAND Erotic Art Fair in New York, A gentleman name Alan. The photo attached to this post are only a few of the paperback comics from my Belasco & The HUN collection...I'm a fan and a student.

Thank You both for planting the seed!!!
