Flashback-1996 with Lopa-Repost from 11/12/2014
Title:Me & Lopa-Freak Show-1996 |
So my GOOD friend Christopher "Chris" Lopa's husband Mark Avers is a renown photographer. We did this circus theme photo shot in their 14 st loft in 1996 and Lopa just uncovered this photo. I played the strongman and Chris is the demented clown-The real "American Horror Story-Freak show"
GREAT TIMES!!!
FLASHBACK to 1988 for all of those individuals LUCKY to be alive in such
an explosive time, Creatively. I was graduating high school and eagerly
looking forward to whatever the future would offer me.
At this point in my life, I had already started to conquer my shyness and nerves (on stage) because I was in a comedy, acting troupe in high school and we had to compete sometimes with rival schools etc. etc.
In the photos, I wore my leather jacket (religiously) and it was hand-painted with various musical influences at the time- P.I.L, Dead or Alive, Culture Club, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, The Smiths and so many more.
F.Y.I-I also designed the t-shirts in high school that everyone is wearing in the photos (Teddy's Improv).
So...
The day I met very cute Steve Buscemi, I remember it like it was yesterday. One of the coolest approaches ever, I was leaving Delancey Street and walking around in the East Village and this guy came out of no where and called for my attention.
He said, I really LOVE your jacket! A lot it's very cool".
I replied with a smile, Thank You! and than I looked at his face and almost fell-out but I had to stay calm in my head...Why? Because Partying Glances had come out 3 years prior and I was a huge fan of the film. Something, a young gay boy would watch over-and-over-again, The soundtrack alone is SUPERB!
We had a very pleasant conversation and than he invited me to a play he was putting on at La Mama's theater and I was thrilled. The play was good and I do recall on opening night Steve cut himself on-stage (a small accident but blood was on him throughout the performance and I remember thinking, Poor Baby hope he's ok.
He came over to greet me and my friends during intermission and we all enjoyed the play. Never saw him again but so PROUD of his great success and I will always cherish meeting an incredible thespian.

Recently came across this picture of Boy George from the very first time I met him.
I can replay the night in my head (verbatim), I was fortunate enough to be standing in front of the stage, underneath Boy George and his amazing troupe accompanying him. The songs sounded great and his vocals were spectacular at one point during his performance, I reached over and handed him a huge sunflower which he held on to while singing the chorus.
I was already in the spotlight by my overtly obvious attire, Knee-high, jet-black, tie-with-a-shoelace Doc Marten boots, Skin-tight, black biker short pants, NO shirt necessary and this was the "KNOCK-OUT" piece of my outfit...
A full-length denim trench coat which was decorated in fabric paint and fabric markers to create different phases of Boy George's look since the beginning of Culture Club but wait! It wasn't just an awesome piece it had to have my personal touch, So each portrait was drawn with ripped images of his face morphing into a newer face of Boy George. I had my back to the entire audience, So I knew it was being featured under the "spotlight".
The following piece I found on the internet about this evening:
The EP Club Tour
The Tunnel Night Club
New York City
October 13, 1993 2 am
This was Boy George's first performance as the new devil in sister George. George was performing for the first time 3 new remixes from the newly awaited EP. The stage was backed up by two famous New York drag queens Brenda A Go- Go & Brandy Wine., The two drag queens both did backing vocals over the PA. George was also with 5 go-go boys and also featured MC kinky. The set including the ramp remix of Generations Of Love featured a rap by MC Kinky. Love Hurts (Evolutions Disco moment remix) and a killer ramp remix to Miss Me Blind (Return to Gender remix) which featured a great rap by MC Kinky also. Some fans were lucky enough to go back stage and meet George including Tea With George founder Amy Greenberg.
Jaime Burke & Marc Berkley worked closely with Boy George during this time and I knew them both "exclusively" and they were well aware of my obsession with Boy George. Jaime (also Boy George obsessed) came from backstage after the performance was over & out in the audience and grabbed me and he said, 'Don't act like a silly queen be cool", He took me into a large room backstage where I immediately spotted Boy George-I was so nervous, shaking but trying desperately to remain calm. He's very tall, I noticed he was engaged in conversations so I walked over to the refreshments table while Jaime was running around doing management stuff etc. I wanted to appear "cool" but inside I was screaming...OMG!!!!OMG!!!OMG!!!
And now the "BEST" part of this story...
My back is turned towards everyone standing backstage talking to Boy George and monopolizing his time while I'm at the refreshments table trying to look nonchalant, When all I really want is to meet my idol. Suddenly, I spot Jaime in my peripheral vision approaching and Boy George from behind me moving towards me, Literally parting a small group of people to come over to me and introduce himself and try desperately to look for a pen to sign my coat after he said "My art work was really twisted & wicked". We chatted briefly, He went on with his entourage, I left from backstage...Crying and telling all my friends I just met Boy George...Still trembling.

Thank You! Jaime Burke & Marc Berkley-R.I.P
for all the INCREDIBLE memories.
Enjoy the FLASHBACK!!!
Side NOTE -
As long as GOD grants me access to be on this planet, I will NEVER forget this (as long as my memory serves me well).
Keep in mind when I was on MTV for 6 years, I was also working simultaneously at night "exclusively" for Marc Berkely - Which meant I had to have my black ass on top of the go-go box upstairs at Limelight "shakin' my money maker". Every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday "Tea Dances" & such. The Grind's filming schedule took place about three or four times a month but the taping took forever...Sometimes, We would shoot about a two week span worth of episodes in a full day (that's a lot of dancing).
LOVE-IT!!!
Exhaustion wasn't an option in those early days because when OPPORTUNITY came knocking it was best to adhere to all it's grueling stipulations. Loosing a little sleep when you are working 24/7 to get your brand out there has to be 50% preparation, 50% talent.
Be DAMNED!!!, to all those miserable HATERS!!!
Title:video card-1987 |
1987-A year before I graduated high school, living in the Bronx next to this very tall, sexy black hair, masculine, Puerto-Rican dude named Reynaldo Gonzalez and his older brother Jimmy or Joe (don't remember that well)...Older guys that lived in a family brownstone-type of house at the corner of the street where I lived. LOVED hanging-out with these guys, they treated me very well always felt comfortable being around them, they had a tennis racquet and other fun accouterments....(Where ever you guys are, THANK YOU!)
The opposite end of the block was the entrance to Riverdale park near Palisade Ave. I would walk thru the park when I came home from school or go there to practice my handball from time to time. Also in the neighborhood a few streets away from the elevated No.4 subway train, which was very convenient (Only a few stops from the original location of Yankee stadium).
I was best friends with this very cool kid-Back than in high school name Billy Oliver or William Clement Oliver the 3rd, He once told me. He had a sister name Kim Oliver-Very beautiful, She was a competitive track star. Billy and I would attend her track meats. Billy had two brothers, Joey & Rodney and they were all being raised by his mother Gloria Oliver. Miss Billy (so much-where ever you are in the world Billy Oliver, I pray you have had a happy life) and this group of guys we all use to hang-out together calling ourselves...The JollyRogers.
FUN! Great Memories!
We always wore jeans, t-shirts and leather motorcycle jackets/ We would save our money and get them on Delancy street for these amazing bargains...One day, I was walking down the street in the East Village and Steve Buscemi stopped me to admire the artwork I had drawn on my MC, He gave me his autograph because I worshipped him in a film called Parting Glances and he also gave me free tickets to a play piece he was doing at a playhouse downtown called "2nd Street Theater".
GOOD days. Will always cherish those precious moments.
