The porn stores have to sell some "regular" films in order to stay open, and some stores that charge an entrance fee, are showing those "regular" films on the big screen! However, the straight sex clubs are allowed to do whatever they want. Sex doesn't have to be hidden, and they can describe their sex parties on their websites. They also don't have to post the signs like the gay places are forced to do, that say pursuant to rule 24-2 of the NY state sanitary code, sexual activity prohibited. Apparently rule 24-2 only applies to gays.
When this started back in the 90's, we had many of our freedoms taken away. WHEN YOU LOSE YOUR RIGHTS, YOU DON'T GET THEM BACK UNLESS YOU DEMAND THEM! IT'S TIME TO START DEMANDING! We may not have much power individually, but together we do! REMEMBER STONEWALL? There are gay men who are as disgusted with these "nasty" places as some of the most right-wing bigots. Whether or not these places are nasty, degrading, or pathetic, is not the point. This is about the freedom to choose!
Some men feel safer in these "nasty" places, rather than going home with a stranger. Just because we have Grindr, and many other ways to get sex, it's not a good enough reason to accept discrimination, and we should have the same freedoms men have in other cities. Gay men have more freedom in Western Europe, than we do in most of this "free" country. You can take a gun into a bar in some red states, but you're not allowed to be naked or have sex in a bar in practically any blue state, because alcohol and nudity are a bad combination.
Why shouldn't the bar owner get to make that decision? NYC should be more progressive than most of puritanical America! Please go to NYC.gov and tell the mayor we are not going to tolerate Giuliani's morality task force anymore!
