From my early days growing-up on the streets of Christopher St. and other avenues, I knew Marsha P. Johnson quit well. I always LOVED hanging out at the Westside Highway Piers besides all the gay sex stuff it was a place for young gays to gather with their possess and kiki up and down the broken boardwalk...It never felt dangerous to me no matter how late or early it was and how far, far, far away I was from my actually home.
Marsha P. Johnson, Angie Xtravaganza, Venus Xtravaganza, a lot of different Vogue house kids use to hang-out and dance there (battle) it was something to see. Marsha was a real SWEETHEART, Kind and very gentle SOUL, Always up for a laugh and telling one-liners and walking off in her "Moms Mabley" drag...I was so young back than, I didn't really know her herstory but as I grow older, I knew... (Thank You, Jesus for maturity) it can be a wonderful thing if you live life on your OWN TERMS!
Years later when I became a bouncer at the LEGENDARY (The Monster bar & club) on Grove Street, Which is where Christopher Street divides and the little park is there with those statutes resembling people in calm action-Right across the street from the BIRTHPLACE of GAY Liberation, The Stonewall Inn...Boy!!! Do I have memories locked behind those walls.
Where ever you are Marsha P. Jonson, I know you are smiling because your legacy lives on.
Thank You, Sweet Sister...xoxo
